For the past few election cycles, the Asian American community in Illinois has been looking for a candidate who can win and give voice to their concerns. In 2010, the'll have two options: Democrat Raja Krishnamoorthi who is running for State Comptroller and Republican Steve Kim who just announced his run for State Attorney General. They both face competitive primaries next February 2nd.

In 2004, the Republican Party in Illinois was looking for a sacrificial lamb in the race for U.S. Senator. Democratic nominee and then-State Senator, Barack Obama, was cruising in the polls and the G.O.P. was desperate for a candidate who could show that their party was just as inclusive as the Democrats. Without any available options in the land of Lincoln, the state G.O.P. had to recruit someone from Maryland, Alan Keyes. He lost bad.

Under the nation’s first African American President and U.S. Attorney General, a much welcomed reinvigoration of our federal government’s commitment to civil rights is underway.  As a civil rights advocate, I applaud the DOJ’s refocusing on civil rights and urge that the DOJ’s Civil Rights division, which was established in 1957 during the era of massive civil rights changes, reprioritize its original mission of fighting racial discrimination.
