Bay Area APAP House Party - Features APA Emerging Leaders

The San Francisco Bay Area APAP House Party took place in Berkeley, CA. We were fortunate to have an impressive group of attendees including many emerging APA leaders from UC Berkeley, local public officials, national & state program directors/coordinators, an APAP board member and our special guest, Jennifer Pae, who is running for Oakland City Council.

Berkeley Thai Buddhist Temple Wins Zoning Appeal - Sunday Brunch is ON!

YAY!! When I lived in the Bay area, I loved Sundays at the Thai Temple - supporting an immigrant/religious institution and eating delicious homemade Thai food!  Way to go Dionne, Asian Law Caucus, Siwaraya, San Francisco State University's Asian American Studies Department, the Thai Alliance in America, and of course the whole Save Sundays at the Berkeley Thai Temple campaign! That's hot community organizing!

John Yoo Pranked by Australian Comedy Team

See video

Can we say "pwned"? I think we can. According to The Huffington Post, chief architect of the Bush torture memos John Yoo was pranked while teaching class (unclear whether at Berkeley or Chapman University) by a member of the Australian comedy show, The Chaser's War on Everything, who was dressed as an Abu Ghraib prisoner:

CNN: How '10-toes Takaki' Changed the World

CNN just posted a very nice obituary on Ronald Takaki, starting with his meager beginnings in Hawaii.

From where he came, no one could have predicted what Ronald Takaki would become. Raised in a low-income area of Oahu, Hawaii, a descendant of Japanese immigrants who toiled in sugar cane plantation fields, he cared more about surfing than schoolwork.

UC Admissions "Scandal" of 2009!... Yo, let's not freak out... just yet (Part 1 of 6)

APAP's blog would like to welcome Spam Fried Rice to our blog team where she will be covering education issues. She starts off with a six-part series called, “UC Admissions Scandal of 2009! … Yo, let’s not freak out… just yet.” The series will appear over the next five days, starting today with Part I. APAP Disclaimer: The opinions expressed in this entry are Spam Fried Rice's and do not necessarily reflect those of APAP. ***** I recently received this alarming email from the chair of the API Legislative Caucus…
Dear friends of the API community: Attached is the letter that all 11 members of the bipartisan, bicameral Joint Asian Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus signed urging the University of California Board of Regents to postpone a vote that drastically changed UC admissions policies.  These changes negatively affect API applicants and will likely result in lower percentages of API students being admitted to UC campuses.  The Board of Regents unfortunately went ahead with the vote despite little public input and virtually no outreach to the API community.  THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. We intend to hold hearings and bring some sunshine to this unfortunate decision.  We will continue to fight this decision. Signed by the Chair of the API Legislative Caucus.
