PREPARED REMARKS BY SECRETARY NAPOLITANO ON IMMIGRATION REFORM AT THE CENTER FOR AMERICAN PROGRESS

Thank you to John Podesta for that warm introduction. John is a good friend of mine, and I admire the work he’s done here at the Center for American Progress to advance the national debate on a range of important issues. John and I have worked together extensively, and I look forward to his continued partnership.

Gary Locke and the Progressive APA Dilemma

gary_locke When I found out that Gary Locke was nominated to be Secretary of Commerce, I felt a weird sensation wash over me. With every APA blog post, every APIAA organization press release, and every APA podcast singing praises upon the Governor, my heart sunk. The reality is that I may be the only one in this small APA blogosphere who hesitates to happily welcome a third Asian American to President Obama's cabinet--I'm so torn. It's a dilemma because in truth, I am actually happy that Governor Locke may become the nation's second APA Secretary of Commerce. He was a solid Governor of the State of Washington and a committed social progressive. Governor Locke is also committed to his APA roots--from his 1997 speech to the AAJA:
"And we have to remember that America belongs to all of us - not just to those whose families have been here longest, or to those who have connections, or to those who never suffered the indignity of slavery, exclusion, or defeat."

AAPI Presidential Appointments in the Obama Administration Update

white-house Most people have heard about Steven Chu being named Secretary of Energy and Eric Shinseki getting the Secretary of Veteran Affairs, but there are over 8,000 jobs to be filled in the Obama Administration and AAPI's are being named to some of those. APAP is currently compiling a list of AAPI's who have secured positions in the White House. Starting next Friday, we'll be providing bi-weekly updates on some of these people and their roles. So come check out the list. And if you know of anyone we should have listed, please let us know. You can send updates to PatriceYao@apaforprogress.org To read more about Steven Chu and Eric Shinseki, join us on the other side.

Howard Dean for Health and Human Services

Now that former Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle has withdrawn his nomination for Secretary of Health and Human Services, it's time to look for a replacement. And since Obama has selected Republican Senator Judd Gregg for Commerce, let's hope he's done appealing to conservatives and finally throws another bone to us progressives.
