Gary Locke addresses Muslim and Arab American leaders

Commerce Secretary Gary Locke recently addressed a group of Muslim and Arab American Business leaders in Dearborn, MI. Here is a transcript of his remarks.

Thank you, Mayor O'Reilly, for your kind introduction.

It is my privilege to address the Muslim and Arab business communities here in Dearborn.

Gary Locke and the Progressive APA Dilemma

gary_locke When I found out that Gary Locke was nominated to be Secretary of Commerce, I felt a weird sensation wash over me. With every APA blog post, every APIAA organization press release, and every APA podcast singing praises upon the Governor, my heart sunk. The reality is that I may be the only one in this small APA blogosphere who hesitates to happily welcome a third Asian American to President Obama's cabinet--I'm so torn. It's a dilemma because in truth, I am actually happy that Governor Locke may become the nation's second APA Secretary of Commerce. He was a solid Governor of the State of Washington and a committed social progressive. Governor Locke is also committed to his APA roots--from his 1997 speech to the AAJA:
"And we have to remember that America belongs to all of us - not just to those whose families have been here longest, or to those who have connections, or to those who never suffered the indignity of slavery, exclusion, or defeat."

For those of you trying to find out more information on Commerce Secretary-nominee Gary Locke and his positions on various issues, here's a little handy guide from the National Journal that compares his positions with those of the two previous nominees Bill Richardson and Judd Gregg.

We've excerpted his bio and his positions for you after the flip.

Governor Gary Locke to Commerce?

gary_locke Wow! Breaking news out of Washington... DC, that is. We may have a third Asian American Cabinet Secretary in the Obama Administration as Former Washington Governor Gary Locke's name is being floated as Commerce Secretary. According to various sources, including this bit from Politico:

Gov. Jennifer Granholm (D-Mich.) tells POLITICO that she heard former Gov. Gary Locke (D-Wash.) floated as a nominee for Commerce Secretary in a one-on-one conversation she had at the NGA meeting with another governor

Locke would be the third nomination for this position after the withdrawals of Bill Richardson and Judd Gregg.
