Immigrant women defy odds on International Women's Day

From Restore Fairness blog

March is the month where International Women's Day celebrates the strides women have made, in spite of all they have to endure. Like Rosa Morales, an immigrant woman who turned her life around and went from the brink of being deported, to being awarded a scholarship for her contribution to society.

Hansen Clarke becomes seventh South Asian to run for Congress

Michigan State Senator Hansen Clarke, who attended the launch of APAP's Detroit Chapter last year, has just announced that he is running for Congress. Clarke, who switches from his run for Governor, becomes the seventh South Asian to run for Congress this year. All of them are Democrats.

Ami Bera and Raj Goyle make the list

Today, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee announced the first round of candidates selected for the prestigious “Red to Blue” program that targets GOP-held districts. It's awesome that the list includes two Asian American candidates: Ami Bera who is running in CA-03 and Raj Goyle who is running in KS-04.

Ami Bera profile in LA Times

Here's a short piece on Congressional candidate Ami Bera that appeared in the LA Times today. Bera is one of six Indian Americans running for Congress this year. Of the six, all of whom are Democrats, Bera seems to be in the top tier, if not the top contender to win in November.

The Changing Face of Immigration

When it comes to the issue of immigration, what quickly comes to American minds? Given that reporters repeatedly write about immigrants crossing the Mexican-U.S. border, the likely response: Hispanics. This focus, unfortunately, has devolved into deleterious scapegoating of immigrants from Central and South America. This is hardly a fair burden for Hispanics to carry, as immigration realities are much more diverse.

Raj Goyle Sets Cash on Hand Record

As we reported earlier, moderate Kansas State Rep. Raj Goyle has turned the open seat race in Kansas into one of the few pick up opportunities for the Democratic party in 2010. According to his recent press release, Goyle $252,953.29 in the final quarter of 2009. The race is still an uphill battle, but Goyle seems to be doing everything right.

Don't Panic Be Heard, Let Congress Know We Want Health Care Reform

I spoke today with an aide for Rep. Mike Quiqley (IL). He stated that Congress is still hoping to hear what comes out of committee before making a final decision about health care reform. I did ask about the recent loss in Massachusetts and how that might effect the process, he stated that they were not concerned about it and it didn't effect how Quiqley or Congress would conduct business.

Raj Goyle makes KS race competitive

Thanks to his great first quarter in fundraising and a history of winning in Republican territory, Democratic candidate for Congress in Kansas 4th Congressional District and current State Senator Raj Goyle, has had his race upgraded from Safe Republican to Likely Republican by the well-respected Congressional Quarterly.  While this remains an uphill battle, the upgrade gives a glimmer of hope and could show further momentum.
