Edward Chen confirmed

After being repeatedly block by Republicans, Judge Edward Chen has finally been confirmed to be a judge on the U.S. District Court for the Northern California District earlier this week. The Senate confirmed him by a vote of 56-42. The number of Asian American federal judges is not at all-time high, doubling from seven to fourteen, since President Obama took office. We now focus our attention on getting nominee Goodwin Liu to becoming the fifteenth.

Here is the press release from NAPABA and AAJC who have been leading the fight.

Edward Chen passes Senate Committee again

For the second time, President Obama's nominee for the Northern District of California, Magistrate Edward Chen, has cleared the Senate Judiciary Committee by a party line vote of 12-7. If you'll remember, Chen's nomination has been stalled by Republicans who have criticized Chen for his public statements and background as a lawyer for the American Civil Liberties Union. From an editorial in the San Francisco Gate:

Jacqueline Nguyen and Edward Chen nominations move forward

This past week, the Senate Judiciary Committee voted unanimously to confirm the nominations of Judges Edward Chen and Jacqueline Nguyen to serve on the federal bench. If both are approved by the full Senate, it would be historic steps. San Francisco U.S. Magistrate Judge Chen would be the first Asian American federal judge to serve in the Northern California federal courts while Judge Nguyen would be the first Vietnamese American to serve on the federal bench.
