A Parent’s Perspective: Give Back Our Daughter’s Right to Marry

See video

By Harold and Ellen Kameya

Twenty-two years ago, our then 20-year old daughter Valerie told us she was gay. As Sansei from Hawaii, raised in a socially conservative Japanese American culture, Valerie’s announcement devastated us. At that time, we were woefully ignorant on issues of sexual orientation, including that being gay is not a choice. As part of that ignorance, we were saddened that we would never see our daughter get married or have a family.

Reviving Civil Rights Enforcement ... It's About Time!

Under the nation’s first African American President and U.S. Attorney General, a much welcomed reinvigoration of our federal government’s commitment to civil rights is underway.  As a civil rights advocate, I applaud the DOJ’s refocusing on civil rights and urge that the DOJ’s Civil Rights division, which was established in 1957 during the era of massive civil rights changes, reprioritize its original mission of fighting racial discrimination.

Stop the Governor's Illegal Budget Cuts to HIV/AIDS

Thousands of protestors joined Pacifika Voice and APAforProgress this evening at Pershing Square, Downtown Los Angeles at the HIV/AIDS Protest Vigil & March.  Progressive allies from the AIDS Healthcare Foundation, AIDS Project Los Angeles, Los Angeles County Commission on HIV, and Bienestar rallied by our side to demand Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to take back a line-item veto he made on July 28th, 2009.

Wear a White Knot in Support of Marriage Equality!

whiteknot.JPG A symbol of equality… because everyone should be able to tie the knot.

The White Knot is the new symbol for marriage equality. It signifies support for the right of gays and lesbians to marry, so that all loving couples may enjoy the same legal rights, benefits, and respect that civil marriage bestows.

More than 3000 White Knots were distributed the first day they were available, during the nationwide rallies for marriage equality. We are encouraging people to wear the White Knot to work, to school, to their place of worship…anywhere they go. It is a highly visible, non-confrontational symbol that will keep the struggle for equality at the top of people’s minds and keep the conversation going.
