LGBT/Pride Week

June is LGBT pride month. We have a variety of queer AAPI's, friends, families and allies posting about their experiences. Thanks to Be DeGuzman, one of APAP's 2009 Unsung Heroes, for coordinating this special week of posts.

To help with our upcoming hate crimes/Vincent Chin week (June 21) or Pacific Islander week (Aug), please let us know. If you have a topic you or your agency would like to coordinate, email us.

Particularly if you are API and love amazing API performers?

A Former Yellow Power Ranger on the Last Airbender

When I was ten years old, I was perpetually the Yellow Power Ranger.

This was slightly maddening to me, as a very young, small Asian boy, to be continually cast in the playground rendition of Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, as a very pretty, slim Asian girl.  But considering the number of racial options my peers and I had been given, it was understandable how quickly I had been typecast.

Who is TV?

Am I Asian Pacific American? The question I asked myself before sitting down to write this blog. How would I properly address the issues that affect my ethnicity if I’m not even sure how I identify myself? Before I begin figuring out where I fit I must go wash my hands. There is still some residual muruku (chakri) on them from my midmorning snack. Before I continue I must turn over my aloo samosas that are baking in the oven. Before I continue I should remove my shoes and place them next to the door. Wait! My kettle is whistling it’s time for afternoon tea.

Here's an update on former APAP Board Members Eric Byler and Annabel Park's upcoming documentary on the battle over immigration in Northern Virginia, 9500 Liberty.  Eric and Annabel have been leading on this issue for the past few years and it's great to see their film coming out at such an important time in the debate. Let them know if you're interested in booking their film.
