Candidate Profiles: District 20 Flushing, New York

Flushing - New York's other (and way way larger) Chinatown has seen a huge spike in Asian-American candidates running to represent it in public office.  With current city councilman John Liu running for the City Comptroller position, a there is now a ferocious primary fight to replace him.  Although the campaigning has at times turned ugly, it seems to have calmed down now with a better focus on issues rather than attacks.  The outcome is not yet apparent and no candidate will win the primary along ethnic lines.  The winner will have to appeal to the large C

Murder in Flushing Reflects Need For Strengthening Hate Crime Laws

Last week, 49 year old World Journal executive David Kao was murdered while sleeping in his car by two teenagers. The teenagers were 16 year old Corey Azor and 17 year old Chris Levy. John Liu Switches Race?

john_liu_bio_pic update It's official. Just got this email from his campaign:

Dear Friend, It's confirmed! Joined by a broad and diverse base of supporters, Councilman John Liu formally announced his campaign to serve as the next Comptroller of the City of New York. “Now more than ever, we need a Comptroller who will root out waste and inefficiency as budget cuts are imposed, and ensure accountability and equal opportunity as billions in stimulus funding arrive," John said earlier today. "With my professional background in finance and my experience in city government, combined with my demand for fairness and equality, I will be that Comptroller. I will be the Comptroller who will scrutinize the details without losing sight of the big picture." Tune in TONIGHT to see/hear John talk about his plans: 6:30 PM (EST) on WCBS Channel 2 News (11:00 PM if basketball game goes overtime), and 11:00 PM (EST) on 98.7 KISS-FM Radio Also, attached are reports about John's campaign. Sincerely, Mei Ru

Here's some interesting news out of the Big Apple about New York City Council member John Liu's race for Public Advocate. It turns out, he may not be running for that office after all. According to this article in the NY Politicker, there is a rumor that:

John Liu was dropping out of the public advocate’s race and going to announce on on Sunday that he’s running for comptroller instead.

To back up the rumor, it seems he's contacted the Campaign Finance Board to change the office he is seeking to undetermined.
