LGBT/Pride Week

June is LGBT pride month. We have a variety of queer AAPI's, friends, families and allies posting about their experiences. Thanks to Be DeGuzman, one of APAP's 2009 Unsung Heroes, for coordinating this special week of posts.

To help with our upcoming hate crimes/Vincent Chin week (June 21) or Pacific Islander week (Aug), please let us know. If you have a topic you or your agency would like to coordinate, email us.

Join the Conversation with Secretary Mineta and other AAPI policy leaders!

To celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, APIAVote is kicking off the Norman Y. Mineta Leadership Institute (NYMLI) Speaker Series in Washington, D.C. This Speaker Series will bolster our NYM Leadership Institute, by bringing the dialogue about AAPI political involvement and political participation to a national stage. Chaired by the Honorable Norman Y. Asian Caucus meets with Cabinet Secretaries

Here's an editorial in today's the Hill written by Congressmember Mike Honda. It's entitled, "Asian Caucus meets with Cabinet Secretaries: Asian Americans & Pacific Islanders have voice under Obama leadership." It really shows the difference between the current administration and the previous one.

Gary Locke and the Progressive APA Dilemma

gary_locke When I found out that Gary Locke was nominated to be Secretary of Commerce, I felt a weird sensation wash over me. With every APA blog post, every APIAA organization press release, and every APA podcast singing praises upon the Governor, my heart sunk. The reality is that I may be the only one in this small APA blogosphere who hesitates to happily welcome a third Asian American to President Obama's cabinet--I'm so torn. It's a dilemma because in truth, I am actually happy that Governor Locke may become the nation's second APA Secretary of Commerce. He was a solid Governor of the State of Washington and a committed social progressive. Governor Locke is also committed to his APA roots--from his 1997 speech to the AAJA:
"And we have to remember that America belongs to all of us - not just to those whose families have been here longest, or to those who have connections, or to those who never suffered the indignity of slavery, exclusion, or defeat."

Gary Locke Nominated for Commerce

gary_locke It's official. President Obama has nominated former Washington Governor Gary Locke to be his Commerce Secretary. Barring some unforeseen problem, Locke should have no problem getting confirmed. (Given the problems with previous Commerce nominees Richardson and Gregg's, I am sure the White House took extra care with this one, even going the safe route with Locke.) Here's the official press release from the White House.

THE WHITE HOUSE Office of the Press Secretary _______________________________________________________________________________ FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 25, 2009 President Obama Nominates Former Governor Gary Locke for Secretary of Commerce Today, President Barack Obama officially nominated former Washington Governor Gary Locke for Secretary of Commerce. In this key role on the administration’s economic team, Locke will work to foster and promote the nation’s economic development at home, and serve as an influential ambassador for American industry abroad. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act will save or create three and a half million jobs over the next two years, and 90 percent of these jobs will be created in the private sector. As Secretary of the Department of Commerce, Locke will ensure American workers can prosper, businesses can thrive, and the economy can grow. “Gary will be a trusted voice in my cabinet, a tireless advocate for our economic competitiveness, and an influential ambassador for American industry who will help us do everything we can – especially now – to promote it around the world,” said President Obama. “I’m grateful he’s agreed to leave one Washington for another, and I look forward to having him on my team as we continue the work of turning our economy around and bringing about a stronger, more prosperous future for all Americans.” “Our nation’s economic success is tied directly to America continuing to lead in technology and innovation and in exporting those products, services and ideas to markets around the globe,” Governor Locke said. “The Department of Commerce can and will help create jobs and the economic vitality our country needs.” See below for full biography:
