One Year After Prop 8: Why Asian Americans Should Support Marriage Equality

On November 4th, 2008, Proposition 8 passed in California, eliminating the right to marry for same-sex couples.  One year later, the rights of the LGBT community are again up for a popular vote, in Maine, Washington and Michigan.

Marriage Equality Moves Back to Hawaii

nishihara It's funny sometimes the things you find sitting in your inbox. I don't know how I got on this group's list (I'm definitely not their target audience), but I just got emailed an urgent message from a group trying to stop the Civil Unions Bill currently making its way through the Hawaii State House. Of course I went to this "group's" website and found the usual assortment of half-naked men in leather and drag alongside the dire warnings about saving the children and overturning the will of the people. (I won't include their link on this site as I don't want to promote their efforts.) However, there is something you can do:

LGBT AAPI's Convening in Seattle, Aug 14-16

Building on past national convenings, the National Queer Asian Pacific Islander Alliance (NQAPIA), a federation of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Asian American, South Asian, and Pacific Islander (API) organizations, is planning a national activist convening in August 14-16, 2009 in Seattle, WA. We hope to acquire and expand the aptitude, ability, and achievements of LGBT APIs, break barriers, and connect community so that we can build the capacity of local groups, invigorate grassroots organizing, train leaders, and challenge homophobia, racism, and anti-immigrant bias.


Marriage Equality Marches On

This past Saturday was the annual Golden Dragon Parade in Los Angeles Chinatown.  The event, sponsored by the Chinese Chamber Commerce, attracts an estimated 100,000 spectators and it was important to get the message out there that AAPI's support marriage equality.
