LGBT/Pride Week

June is LGBT pride month. We have a variety of queer AAPI's, friends, families and allies posting about their experiences. Thanks to Be DeGuzman, one of APAP's 2009 Unsung Heroes, for coordinating this special week of posts.

To help with our upcoming hate crimes/Vincent Chin week (June 21) or Pacific Islander week (Aug), please let us know. If you have a topic you or your agency would like to coordinate, email us.

One Year After Prop 8: Why Asian Americans Should Support Marriage Equality

On November 4th, 2008, Proposition 8 passed in California, eliminating the right to marry for same-sex couples.  One year later, the rights of the LGBT community are again up for a popular vote, in Maine, Washington and Michigan.

As a straight ally in the fight for marriage equality, I am often asked why I work on the issue of marriage equality.

Philip Spooner Video: Republican WWII Veteran Makes Case for Gay Marriage

Check this out:

Philip Spooner, 86, a lifetime Republican and World War II veteran is a great American hero who has served our country. Surprise to most people, he happens to support gay marriage. Back in April, 2009, the honorable veteran gave a poignant speech in support of gay marriage at Maine's Judiciary Committee.

His voice stumbles as he gives his life story, serving in multiple battles in Europe, helping wounded Americans, and, more importantly, explaining that he is a true American. At the end he states there is nothing more American than fighting for equality.

National Equality March, Events, and Obama's Address on LGBT Rights

The last time us gays marched on Washington was the semi-disastrous march in 2000 organized by the HRC. Before that was the 1993 march when I was 12. This year and this march was our time; the newly dubbed "prop 8" generation. This year's march was not without controversy with internal naysayers and questioners all the way to the top including Barney Frank.

Asian Americans Not Included in Article... Again

Don't you hate seeing an exciting headline, going to the article and then realizing that you're not included in the discussion?  This happened again today and it pisses me off.

Gay Marriage Dead in New York State Following Democratic Defections

In November, Democrats in the State Senate finally wrestled control from the Republicans after four decades. New Yorkers like me expressed hope that in the wake of the Prop 8 disaster, marriage equality would at least be established in our state and that we could be a model for other states around the country. Fast forward half a year later and gay marriage is legal in most of New England, while marriage equality in New York and California could not be further away.

Lesbian Mom Shirley Tan Testifies for the Uniting American Families Act

One of the greatest injustices dealt to gay and lesbian couples because of the lack of marriage rights, is their inability to sponsor their would-be spouses for citizenship. The Uniting American Families Act would change that allowing "permanent partners" of permanent residents to be sponsored for permanent residency. First introduced in 2000, the bill has stalled in the judiciary committee in 2000, 2001, 2003, 2005, and 2007.

D-Day and Meet in the Middle: An Equality Week Recap

Equality week was insaaaane!

The decision came down Tuesday morning, and though it wasn’t a surprise, we were pissed.

First stop, the Latino Equality Alliance rally in East LA. Hundreds of people showed up in the middle of their work day to express their anger and disappointment.

My roommate and a bunch of my homies are in Fresno, CA this weekend to protest the CA Supreme Court Decision on Prop 8, including our fellow bloger Teresa and her lovely wife Melissa.  They're at "Meet in the Middle 4 Equality"

Why I’d Like to Return My California Marriage License

Though my wife can be a terror at times, I still like keeping her around as my spouse. This is also despite the fact that Andy Pugno of “Yes on 8” fully expects us to divorce: “if California goes as Massachusetts did after legalizing gay marriage, a substantial portion of the still-recognized gay marriages will be dissolved by divorce within a few years."
