Rand Paul Blocking Funds for Elderly and Disabled Refugees

Disturbing news- GOP and Tea-Party Senator Rand Paul has blocked funds for elderly and disabled refugees. The bill that Senator Paul blocked had even come from a disturbing agreement between Democratic and Republican Senators to offset the costs of the program with fee increases for visa applications, a move that would cause severe hardship for lower income immigrants. For Some Reason, Newt Gingrich is Still Running for President, and He Wants You! (Go Away...)

For some reason, Newt Gingrich is still running for President, and according to Politico, he has a new plan to win the Republican nomination for the 2012 Presidential Election: court the Asian American vote!

Update on President Obama's American Jobs Act Proposal - AAPI Factsheet Now Up!

Last week, I wrote about the fact sheet that the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders put out on President Obama's American Jobs Act proposal, and how it might benefit AAPI communities (Blog Post).  I also criticized how the American Jobs Act website didn't have a section on the jobs' proposed impact on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, even though we've been hit disproportionally in certain ways by the recession.

Michelle Bachmann Says Immigration System Worked "Very, Very Well" Pre-1965

Congresswoman and provocoteur extraordinaire Michelle Bachmann recently spoke about how the immigration system worked "very, very well" until the 1965 Immigration and Naturalization Act. Honestly, I do think that the headlines around the blogosphere attributing the line "U.S. Immigration System Worked Very, Very Well Under the Asian Exclusion Act" are somewhat unfair.

Voter Suppression 101

Located on the National Mall, the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial is now open to the public. But even as Washington prepares to honor Reverend King, our communities' voting rights are being aggressively stripped away by GOP politicians across the country. Before the Civil Rights Movement, most Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders could not vote, intermarry, buy a home, or seek recourse against political or economic discrimination.

Nobel Peace Prize Awarded to American, Conservatives Go Crazy With Rage

Today President Obama was awarded the 2009 Nobel Peace Prize for his extraordinary efforts to create diplomacy throughout the world. While many individuals question the award, only three groups outright objected to it: the Taliban, claiming he has done nothing to pursue peace in Afghanistan; Hamas, because the American government still does not recognize the nation of Palestine; and American Conservatives, because he is President Obama.

Jindal's Response Not So Big, Not So Easy

bobby_jindal Well, it looks like the reviews are in for Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal's response to President Obama's address to the joint session of Congress last night. Let's just say, "the liberal media" strikes again! How else can you explain headlines like: Jindal's GOP Response Flops Jindal's response: Panned, seared And being compared to the character of Kenneth from 30 Rock. This was supposed to be Jindal's big national debut and it was a colossal flop. I guess Sarah Palin and Mike Huckabee can give a big sigh of relief. Then again others have bounced back from dismal national debuts. Think of Bill Clinton's debut at the Democratic National Convention a few years back. The bigger problem is for the Republican party and their small and uninspiring ideas.
