LGBT/Pride Week

June is LGBT pride month. We have a variety of queer AAPI's, friends, families and allies posting about their experiences. Thanks to Be DeGuzman, one of APAP's 2009 Unsung Heroes, for coordinating this special week of posts.

Calvin Say needs to grow a backbone

Why can't Democrats learn how to fight for anything? Recently, the Hawaiian Senate passed a civil union bill by a margin of 18-7. The measure now moves to the State House where the Democrats outnumber Republicans 45-6 and passage is almost certainly guaranteed. Daniel Akaka who has authored similar legislation during previous congressional sessions, but has yet to get the measure passed by the full Senate. Here is the press release:

I know that Hawaiian Senator Daniel Inouye is revered in some Asian American and Pacific Islander circles, but lately he's been getting under my skin.

Hawaiian Healthcare

As we all continue fighting for a robust public option, it's also important to hear about other ways to reduce cost and increase access to health care in this country. Here's an interesting article in the Honolulu Star Bulletin about a program I had never heard of. It seems in Hawaii, they have a successful program called the Prepaid Health Care Act:

Glenn Wakai to run for HI Senate

Former television anchor and current Democratic Hawaii State Representative Glenn Wakai has officially thrown his hat in the ring for the State Senate seat being vacated by Norman Sakamoto. Wakai has represented the 31st House District (Moanalua Valley-Salt Lake) since 2002.
