LGBT/Pride Week

June is LGBT pride month. We have a variety of queer AAPI's, friends, families and allies posting about their experiences. Thanks to Be DeGuzman, one of APAP's 2009 Unsung Heroes, for coordinating this special week of posts.

To help with our upcoming hate crimes/Vincent Chin week (June 21) or Pacific Islander week (Aug), please let us know. If you have a topic you or your agency would like to coordinate, email us.

Neugebauer (TX-19) ID'd as 'Baby Killer' Shouter

From the following article at Huffington Post:

"In the heat and emotion of the debate, I exclaimed the phrase 'it's a baby killer' in reference to the agreement reached by the Democratic leadership," Neugebauer said. "I deeply regret that my actions were mistakenly interpreted as a direct reference to Congressman Stupak himself."

Is Obama's health care summit a brilliant chess move?

Until the Red Sox finally won a World Series in 2004, growing up a Red Sox fan was an exercise in eternal optimism and disappointment. Every year I thought "THIS time it will be different", but just when the Red Sox seemed poised to take it home, they would snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Don't Panic Be Heard, Let Congress Know We Want Health Care Reform

I spoke today with an aide for Rep. Mike Quiqley (IL). He stated that Congress is still hoping to hear what comes out of committee before making a final decision about health care reform. I did ask about the recent loss in Massachusetts and how that might effect the process, he stated that they were not concerned about it and it didn't effect how Quiqley or Congress would conduct business.

The "I-word" in Health Care Reform

Whenever the word immigrant is mentioned during health care reform it stirs up heated emotions.  On the extremely conservative end, it immediately ignites a controversial topic that undocumented immigrants do not belong in this country and should be deported.  At the other end of the spectrum, liberals argue that immigrants are the backbone to our country and that their work ethic helps drive the U.S economy.

Reclaiming Our Hope & A Future Shaped Without Fear

I went to the doctor yesterday (I'm lucky my health insurance is fully covered by the small nonprofit I lead, where we see the health of our employees as critical to organizational success). As I was leaving the doctor's office, an elderly woman frantically rushed up the stairs of the building, asking me if I could help her husband. When I ran out with her, I saw that he'd tripped and fallen getting out of the car outside, lying down with blood oozing out of his head on the pavement.

Donate to Rep. Joe "You Lie" Wilson's Opponent Rob Miller!

By now, we all probably know that some a-hole shouted out "You lie" during President Obama's speech when the President was disputing the charge that health care reform will cover illegal aliens. Far from being a random heckler, it was a sitting member of Congress, U.S. Representative Joe Wilson (SC-02).  (What is in the water in SC these days, anyway?)
