LGBT/Pride Week

June is LGBT pride month. We have a variety of queer AAPI's, friends, families and allies posting about their experiences. Thanks to Be DeGuzman, one of APAP's 2009 Unsung Heroes, for coordinating this special week of posts.

To help with our upcoming hate crimes/Vincent Chin week (June 21) or Pacific Islander week (Aug), please let us know. If you have a topic you or your agency would like to coordinate, email us.

Mother’s Kettle Corn & the American Marketplace

Mother’s Kettle Corn & the American Marketplace
By EunSook Lee

I travel out of town for work for many weeks out of a year, so whenever I am in Los Angeles, I feel like I am rushing to squeeze as much out of the limited days I have in the office. I do that so that I can spend special time with my children. And, when we can, we make sure to stop by the farmer’s market. We go for our favorite: standard American kettle corn.

Making Room for Everyone at the Health Reform Table

The reality is that as we come closer to the passage of health reform, many immigrants are going to be left out.

HR 3962 - The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly

Yesterday the House of Representatives made history by passing HR 3692, The Affordable Health Care for America Act.  We are finally one step closer to joining the rest of the developed world in providing health care for our people.  The bill is not perfect, but I am proud that 218 Representatives, including Rep. Cao, saw that this is an amazing opportunity to make an impact in the lives of tens of millions of Americans, and a huge stride in the direction of steering our broken health care system in the right direction.  Rep.

Honda leads the charge on immigrant inclusion in health reform

Amidst a flurry of proposals and amendments by conservative Republicans to increase barriers to health care for immigrants as well as to derail the reform process, Representative Mike Honda (D-Calif) is leading the charge to remove the excessive and onerous five year waiting period for legal permanent residents. Joe Wilson Wins - Baucus Introduces Anti Immigrant Language in Health Plan

I'm not sure if this is the battle or the war, but Joe Wilson and his hateful anti immigrant forces seem to have won.

Even though his outburst last Wednesday had dems across the country throwing money at his opponent, word since late Friday was that Baucus has written more restrictive language in the Senate Finance proposal to exclude immigrants.

Response to Obama's Speech: Excuse me, hi. I know we haven't met, but will you build the future with me?

I just watched the Presiden't Health Reform speech at an OFA watch party in Oakland, and I am FIRED UP!  For those who have been following, his new plan isn't radically different from what the policy discussion has been all along.

Joe Wilson's Outburst and a Sneak Peek at the Immigration Debate

If you didn't know, Congressman Wilson (South Carolina - R) shouted "You lie!" at the President of the United States of America during a joint session of Congress.  South Carolina Democratic party chair Carol Fowler commented, "Never has any member of Congress shown such disrespect for the president during a speech" (CNN)  FYI, you can contribute to Wilson's midterm election opponent -- Rob Miller has a decent shot

Ask Not What Health Reform Has Done for You...

On the eve of the President's "big speech" on health reform, my facebook and email are full of "advice".

"Why hasn't he said ____?"

"He needs to just say _____!"

"Write to the President and demand he do ____!"

Want to Support Health Reform? Take Action on Tuesday

After two weeks of incredible posts on the need for a broad and inclusive health reform, the fight to pass health reform will happen in the predominantly API SoCal town of Alhambra on Tuesday night, when Congressman Adam Schiff, a "Blue-Dog" Democrat, hosts a townhall on health care reform.

Five Years to Life - How Congress is failing to meet the needs of APIs in Health Reform

Each day we hear about the need to reform our health care system, and often the conversation focuses on those trying to derail the process. We often hear about the skyrocketing costs leading to bankruptcy for many families, the insurance company profit margins and the economic costs and benefits reform could potentially bring. What we don’t hear about are the large swaths of the American population that will be left out entirely. Among them: Immigrants.
