Representative Honda Introduces Bi-Partisan Bill to End Hepatitis Epidemic

Representative Mike Honda recently introduced Viral Hepatitis and Liver Cancer Control and Prevention Act of 2009.

The bill has support from various politicians, both Democrats and Republicans, that addresses a national problem infecting many Americans with the diseases.

According to the National AIDS Treatment Advocacy Project (NATAP), hepatitis b infects 1.25 million Americans, half of whom as Asian Americans.


Shedding Light on Hepatitis B

At the Boston World Trade Center, Gilead Sciences hosted a lunch at the annual Asian American Journalists Association convention called The Hidden Truth: Hepatitis B and the Asian American Community.  While many attendees were drawn in by the promise of free food, it was an informative event presenting some alarming medical facts that still seem to be relatively unknown, or simply not addressed, in many Asian communities:

•    Half of all people in the United States with chronic Hepatitis B are Asian.
