Indian American Democratic Candidates Results from IALI

There were quite a few South Asians who ran for office on Tuesday. While there were a lot of disappointing results (Raj Goyle, Manan Trivedi, Ami Bera), there were some other victories around the country. Here is a great update that we got from the Indian American Leadership Institute on the candidates that they were following this past election cycle. Congratulations to the winners and hopefully some of the non-winners will decide to run again in a more favorable environment.

Ami Bera and Raj Goyle make the list

Today, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee announced the first round of candidates selected for the prestigious “Red to Blue” program that targets GOP-held districts. It's awesome that the list includes two Asian American candidates: Ami Bera who is running in CA-03 and Raj Goyle who is running in KS-04.

Raj Goyle Sets Cash on Hand Record

As we reported earlier, moderate Kansas State Rep. Raj Goyle has turned the open seat race in Kansas into one of the few pick up opportunities for the Democratic party in 2010. According to his recent press release, Goyle $252,953.29 in the final quarter of 2009. The race is still an uphill battle, but Goyle seems to be doing everything right.

Surya Yalamanchili switches to Democratic primary

When former reality TV star Surya Yalamanchili ("The Apprentice") announced his candidacy for the 2nd Congressional district, he came out as an independent. Now, after a few months of campaigning, he has decided to pursue the Democratic nomination. The announcement from his website:

Raj Goyle makes KS race competitive

Thanks to his great first quarter in fundraising and a history of winning in Republican territory, Democratic candidate for Congress in Kansas 4th Congressional District and current State Senator Raj Goyle, has had his race upgraded from Safe Republican to Likely Republican by the well-respected Congressional Quarterly.  While this remains an uphill battle, the upgrade gives a glimmer of hope and could show further momentum.

Manan Trivedi's Statement on Afghanistan

Reaction to President Obama's plan to send an additional 30,000 troops to Afghanistan has been decidely mixed with some resistance from progressive members of Congress. Joining this chorus is APAP PAC-endorsed candidate Manan Trivedi who just released this statement.

Ami Bera's Fundraising clears the field

Thanks to some stellar fundraising in the past two quarters, physician Ami Bera has managed to scare off some potential rivals and avoid a Democratic primary for the Congressional seat in CA-03. His main competitor, Bill Slaton, dropped out today and endorsed Bera. Bera now has a clear path to the general election against incumbent Republican Dan Lungren. According to this article in Hotline:

India & US Agree on Climate Change

"President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh have launched what the White House is calling a green partnership, affirming the countries' commitment to combating climate change and ensuring energy security and clean energy." The hope is to create more jobs, investment and growth for each country through this partnership - while also combating climate change, of course.

Surya Yalamanchili becomes sixth South Asian to run for Congress

Add reality-TV contestant Surya Yalamanchili to the growing list of South Asians running for Congress.

Manan Trivedi snags major endorsement

Things are starting to get interesting in PA-06. That's where physician, Iraq War veteran and APAP-PAC endorsed candidate Manan Trivedi has not only posted strong numbers in his first fundraising quarter, but also now snagged another major endorsement. PA State Senator Andrew Dinniman has come out with an endorsement of Trivedi.
