LGBT/Pride Week

June is LGBT pride month. We have a variety of queer AAPI's, friends, families and allies posting about their experiences. Thanks to Be DeGuzman, one of APAP's 2009 Unsung Heroes, for coordinating this special week of posts.

To help with our upcoming hate crimes/Vincent Chin week (June 21) or Pacific Islander week (Aug), please let us know. If you have a topic you or your agency would like to coordinate, email us.

Shortage of Korean Interpreters In Today's NYC Democratic Primary

With four Korean-Americans running for three City Council seats you would think the Board of Elections would be better prepared.  However, according to the Asian American Legal Defense Fund, that not only is there an unprecedentedly high Korean-American turnout but also a severe lack of Korean interpreters

Glen Magpantay, an attorney with the advocacy group, said Board of Elections officials are struggling to deal with an uptick in the number of Korean Americans turning out to the polls.

Korean American candidates in New York City Council races

Here's a blog post on Koreanbeacon about three of the Korean Americans running for a seat on the New York City Council. Just a note, John Choe, who is also running in District 20 is also Korean American.

New York City AAPI Candidates Update

The primary election in New York City is less than a week away. As you know, there are quite a few Asian Americans running for office. Here's a round up of a few articles and endorsements on the City Council candidates from around the web:

Issue of Race surfaces in New York City Council primary

The race to replace City Councilman John Liu's seat is getting down to the wire and things are getting heated. With just two weeks to go until the primary election, Sept. 15, the six Democratic candidates — John Choe, Yen Chou, S.J. Jung, Constantine Kavadas, Isaac Sasson and James Wu — met for a heated debate in Flushing and the claws came out.

Grading the Websites of AAPI Candidates: NYC Edition

There are lots of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders running for local, state and federal office all across the country in 2009 and 2010. In hopes of analyzing each campaign’s new media strategy, we’ll be posting a series of entries with their websites and other on-line presence.  (If anyone knows HTML and can help me make this into a pretty grid, please let me know. I eventually want to have one master grid for all AAPI candidates around the country running for office.)

Get Involved: Volunteer for John Choe in Flushing, New York

Hello all, this information was passed to me by a volunteer in John Choe's campaign.  John Choe is one of the more progressive candidates in a crowded race for the City Council seat for Flushing, New York.

APA for Progress Exclusive: Interview with John Choe, Frontrunner in Flushing City Council race

John Choe has served as chief of staff for John Liu since 2002.  He is now running to replace his former boss who is running for NYC comptroller due to term limits.  Choe has received numerous endorsements from Queens County Democratic Party, NYS African-American Public Affairs Committee, Stonewall Democrats, Queens County Puerto Ricans for Political Action, and Jefferson Democratic Club.

In a very crowded field of both Asian and non-Asian American candidates, what distinguishes you from the pack?
