Yesterday, John Liu was sworn in as New York City's first Asian-American City Comptroller.  He took an ambitious tone promising among other things to provide for an equitable distribution of contracts as well as oversight on the city's budget.  A major problem with said contracts is the lack of these contracts awarded to minority owned businesses.

Asian Americans running for office in New York City had a banner year this past cycle, not just with the record-number of candidates, but also the amount of money they raised. In fact, the three most expensive campaigns for New York City Council were all run by Asian Americans: Kevin Kim, Yen Chou and Peter Koo.

Here's a link to an awesome audioclip of Comptroller-elect John Liu discussing his own race, as well as the Asian American community in general. In the eight-minute clip, Liu discusses everything from the historic number of Asian American candidates to the dynamics of the AAPI community, calling it a friendly "sibling rivalry." Liu also discusses how the different communities were ultimately able to cross ethnic lines and support different AAPI candidates. It's a great interview and definitely worth a listen. It's obvious that Liu has a great knowledge of the AAPI community. 


John Liu top vote-getter in New York City

Here's a little bit of information out of New York that will lend fuel to the talks of newly-elected City Comptroller John Liu eventually running for higher office. In the recent Nov. 3rd elected, Liu not only became the  first Asian American to hold the second highest office in the world’s foremost city, but he also out-polled Mayor Michael Bloomberg by about 150,000 votes.

Asian American candidates vote results

There were quite a few Asian Americans on the ballot yesterday. Here are the raw numbers for some of the races that APAP was covering this past election cycle. Special congratulations to all the winners, including historic victors Mark Keam in Virginia and John Liu in New York City.

Today's the big election day in parts of the country.
