Regret for Chinese Exclusion Laws Faces Uphill Battle in House - Part 1

When the Senate passed Senate Resolution 201, it came as a pleasant surprise. I was eager to read about it, but only belatedly discovered that it has yet to pass in the House. In May 2011, Congresswoman Chu had first sponsored House Resolution 282 "Resolution Expressing Regret for the Chinese Exclusion Laws." President Obama Meets with CAPAC in a Historic Meeting

For the first time in history, the President of the United States met formally with the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) today. President Obama and senior members of his staff met with CAPAC in the Cabinet Room of the White House, where they discussed, among other topics, immigration reform, AAPI judicial nominations, health disparities, data disaggregation, and White House engagement with AAPI communities.


Labor Day Tweets

Hope everyone is enjoying their Labor Day Weekend. I thought I would share a couple of tweets from some of our elected officials and candidates in 2012, reminding us the importance of working men and women and how the Obama Administration needs to do a better job of helping the American public. (Surprisingly, not as many politicians tweeting about this as I would've thought.)


CAPAC Updates: Immigration Enforcement and Minority Health Disparities

Last week, the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) issued two press releases. One was a joint statement with the TriCaucus - which is made up of CAPAC, the Congressional Black Caucus, and the Congressional Hispanic Caucus - calling for renewed investment in to the National Institute for Minority Health and Health Disparities. The other was a press release supporting President Obama's administration for its newly released policy prioritizing criminal immigrant deportations and allowing current deportation proceedings to be placed under case-by-case review.

For readers in California, the South Asian Network (SAN) will be hosting a community hearing this Saturday, August 20th, in Artesia, (southern) California. The community hearing is titled "Ten Years after 9/11."

Nancy Pelosi and CAPAC Chair Judy Chu to Kick off 2011 Asian American and Pacific Islander Summit

The 2011 Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Summit will begin tomorrow, May 24th, at 1 p.m. with opening remarks from House Democratic Leader Pelosi and Congresswoman Chu, Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC). The summit is hosted annually by House Democratic Leadership and CAPAC to connect AAPI community leaders and advocates with federal policymakers and issue experts.

Gene Kim named Executive Director of CAPAC

Congresswoman Judy Chu (D-CA), Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC), announced the incoming staff of the caucus:  Executive Director Gene F. Kim and Assistant Coordinator Andy Wong.
