A Parent’s Perspective: Give Back Our Daughter’s Right to Marry

See video

By Harold and Ellen Kameya

Twenty-two years ago, our then 20-year old daughter Valerie told us she was gay. As Sansei from Hawaii, raised in a socially conservative Japanese American culture, Valerie’s announcement devastated us. At that time, we were woefully ignorant on issues of sexual orientation, including that being gay is not a choice. As part of that ignorance, we were saddened that we would never see our daughter get married or have a family.

Wear a White Knot in Support of Marriage Equality!

whiteknot.JPG A symbol of equality… because everyone should be able to tie the knot.

The White Knot is the new symbol for marriage equality. It signifies support for the right of gays and lesbians to marry, so that all loving couples may enjoy the same legal rights, benefits, and respect that civil marriage bestows.

More than 3000 White Knots were distributed the first day they were available, during the nationwide rallies for marriage equality. We are encouraging people to wear the White Knot to work, to school, to their place of worship…anywhere they go. It is a highly visible, non-confrontational symbol that will keep the struggle for equality at the top of people’s minds and keep the conversation going.
