LGBT/Pride Week

June is LGBT pride month. We have a variety of queer AAPI's, friends, families and allies posting about their experiences. Thanks to Be DeGuzman, one of APAP's 2009 Unsung Heroes, for coordinating this special week of posts.

To help with our upcoming hate crimes/Vincent Chin week (June 21) or Pacific Islander week (Aug), please let us know. If you have a topic you or your agency would like to coordinate, email us.

Immigration Reform: Where are all the AAPIs at?

On Sunday, March 21, NAKASEC (the National Korean American Service and Education Consortium) asks you to march with us on the Capitol alongside tens of thousands to demand President Barack Obama and Congress keep their promise to fix our broken immigration system in 2010. Immigration reform is vital to making America’s economy working for all families. Our communities cannot wait any longer. It’s time to give democracy a workout and march together and hold our elected leaders accountable.

Too Much At Stake for Complacency - A Call to Action for Immigration Reform

Look at "those illegals,” my friend said jokingly while he was dropping me off to the Bart Station. He pointed at two Mexican immigrants standing against the fence. Although it was a joke, I was extremely angry. Yet, I was defenseless and vulnerable. I simply laughed with him and stayed casual as if nothing happened. Once he dropped me off, I wondered if he would treat me differently if he knew that I’m also “illegal.”

Mother’s Kettle Corn & the American Marketplace

Mother’s Kettle Corn & the American Marketplace
By EunSook Lee

I travel out of town for work for many weeks out of a year, so whenever I am in Los Angeles, I feel like I am rushing to squeeze as much out of the limited days I have in the office. I do that so that I can spend special time with my children. And, when we can, we make sure to stop by the farmer’s market. We go for our favorite: standard American kettle corn.

Asian American 2010 Census Monitoring Project: Evaluation and Feedback

AALDEF, OCA, SAALT, NAKASEC, CAA, AAF, and ALC are helping the US Census Bureau effectively reach out to Asian Americans.  We aim to assess successes and problems in the Bureau’s 2010 Census plans and activities.

Please take a few minutes to complete an on-line survey or/and participate in a national Asian American conference call evaluating the Census.  Please share your experiences in working with the Census Bureau so we can make concrete recommendations for improvement.
