LGBT/Pride Week

June is LGBT pride month. We have a variety of queer AAPI's, friends, families and allies posting about their experiences. Thanks to Be DeGuzman, one of APAP's 2009 Unsung Heroes, for coordinating this special week of posts.

To help with our upcoming hate crimes/Vincent Chin week (June 21) or Pacific Islander week (Aug), please let us know. If you have a topic you or your agency would like to coordinate, email us.

A Former Yellow Power Ranger on the Last Airbender

When I was ten years old, I was perpetually the Yellow Power Ranger.

This was slightly maddening to me, as a very young, small Asian boy, to be continually cast in the playground rendition of Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers, as a very pretty, slim Asian girl.  But considering the number of racial options my peers and I had been given, it was understandable how quickly I had been typecast.

Asian American 2010 Census Monitoring Project: Evaluation and Feedback

AALDEF, OCA, SAALT, NAKASEC, CAA, AAF, and ALC are helping the US Census Bureau effectively reach out to Asian Americans.  We aim to assess successes and problems in the Bureau’s 2010 Census plans and activities.

Please take a few minutes to complete an on-line survey or/and participate in a national Asian American conference call evaluating the Census.  Please share your experiences in working with the Census Bureau so we can make concrete recommendations for improvement.

Communities across the country are joining this national conversation in their homes, churches, classrooms, and worksites, and then taking actions to promote immigration reform.

Job Hunting? Let me help you!

Times are tough, unemployment is through the roof and I know there are a ton of highly educated and experienced talent sitting in the pews waiting to get hired by their dream jobs. I help APAP from time to time fill out their jobs board with openings that you all may be interested. That being said I want to know more about YOU all who are either looking for work to better assist in your job hunt.

Guam Considers Domestic Partnerships

Recently, the Legislature in Guam took steps to recognize to recognize gay and lesbian relationships. In June, the Guam Youth Congress, an advisory board to the territory's legislature, introduced Bill 138 which would grant gays and lesbian couples all the rights and obligations of heterosexual married spouses. Of course, the usual suspects have come out against equality.

Samoan Flag Day: A Wise Investment Restores Public Trust

Carson, CA (Pacifika Voice) August 4, 2009--  The Samoan Federation of area chiefs and a collaborative of community partners reclaimed Samoan Flag Day this week.  Havoc wreaked by gang members at a fatal event shooting which took place last year almost derailed the signature community event.

UC Admissions "Scandal" of 2009!... Yo, let's not freak out... just yet (Part 1 of 6)

APAP's blog would like to welcome Spam Fried Rice to our blog team where she will be covering education issues. She starts off with a six-part series called, “UC Admissions Scandal of 2009! … Yo, let’s not freak out… just yet.” The series will appear over the next five days, starting today with Part I. APAP Disclaimer: The opinions expressed in this entry are Spam Fried Rice's and do not necessarily reflect those of APAP. ***** I recently received this alarming email from the chair of the API Legislative Caucus…
Dear friends of the API community: Attached is the letter that all 11 members of the bipartisan, bicameral Joint Asian Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus signed urging the University of California Board of Regents to postpone a vote that drastically changed UC admissions policies.  These changes negatively affect API applicants and will likely result in lower percentages of API students being admitted to UC campuses.  The Board of Regents unfortunately went ahead with the vote despite little public input and virtually no outreach to the API community.  THIS IS UNACCEPTABLE. We intend to hold hearings and bring some sunshine to this unfortunate decision.  We will continue to fight this decision. Signed by the Chair of the API Legislative Caucus.
