CAPAC's State of the AAPI Community

Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Mike Honda (D-CA) issued the following statement on the State of the Asian American and Pacific Islander community:

2010 Census Outreach to Asian Americans & Pacific Islanders

Happy New Year! It's 2010, and no matter how you say it -- "two thousand and ten" or "twenty-ten" -- the new year brings one very important matter -- THE 2010 CENSUS!!!

Over the holidays, I noticed a good number of press releases and news items about efforts by AAPI community organizations to encourage, but I'm thinking that most of us were in the holiday mood, and could use a reminder of what's happening!

Kiran Ahuja appointed E.D. of White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders

Ever since President Obama signed the Executive Order to reinstate the White House Initiative on AAPIs (WHIAAPI) back in October, I've been waiting on pins and needles to see whom the administration would appoint as the new executive director.  I wondered whether President Obama would appoint someone whose been around in the "mainstream" of AAPI leadership or whether he would appoint someone whose leadership has been about the em

Asian Caucus meets with Cabinet Secretaries

Here's an editorial in today's the Hill written by Congressmember Mike Honda. It's entitled, "Asian Caucus meets with Cabinet Secretaries: Asian Americans & Pacific Islanders have voice under Obama leadership." It really shows the difference between the current administration and the previous one.

Spoken Word at the White House? Yes, that is change!

Did any of you catch the video stream of the spoken word performances at the White House tonight?

DC Voting Rights and Asian Americans/ Pacific Islanders: Still Second Class Citizens?

I first moved to the Washington, DC metropolitan area when my twin brother had just been shipped off to Guam where he was to be stationed as part of the U.S. Navy.  We noted the irony that with the two of us living in the nation’s capital and the far-off Pacific Island U.S. territory of Guam, neither of us had a voting representative in Congress.  Delegates Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) and Robert A. Underwood (D-GU) both served their districts and this nation admirably over the years, but they were, quite literally, second class citizens compared to their colleagues in the House of Representatives.  They were able to participate in committees, where some of the important work of legislation happens, but when it came to an actual vote on the laws of the land, they were denied.

Stimulating Education

Hey Asian Americans! President Obama just announced his plans to change education policy. Where is everyone getting all worked up over the proposals??? It's always so interesting to me  that Asian Americans get all worked up over elite college admissions, but rarely do they articulate any interest in education policy.  Is it just not as sexy a topic? What is it?  What do you think? There are definitely some  interesting things in the education portion of the stimulus... let's take a look, shall we?

UC Admissions "Scandal" of 2009! ... Yo, let's not freak out... just yet (Part 2 of 6)

The Joint API Legislative Caucus has specific reservatios about how the new admissions proposals would decrease the percentages of Asian Pacific Islanders from 32.6% to 25.2% of the entire eligibility pool, including both guaranteed and entitled to review applicants.  The UC has not made available sufficient information on how or what aspects of the proposal would cause this decrease. -- From California API Legislative Caucus to UC Regents, 02.03.09

Today we're going to have a math lesson on percentages, numerators, and denominators; so we can understand why the percentage of students entitled to UC admissions review (ETR) that are AAPI goes from 32.6% to 25.2%. Before the math lesson, let's understand how the new UC policy will determine which high school students will be entitled to review (ETR) in the UC admissions process.
