Indian American Democratic Candidates Results from IALI

There were quite a few South Asians who ran for office on Tuesday. While there were a lot of disappointing results (Raj Goyle, Manan Trivedi, Ami Bera), there were some other victories around the country. Here is a great update that we got from the Indian American Leadership Institute on the candidates that they were following this past election cycle. Congratulations to the winners and hopefully some of the non-winners will decide to run again in a more favorable environment.

Final Push for 2010 AAPI GOTV mobilization

Have you caught GOTV fever yet? Volunteers for the Rep. Honda’s 2010 AAPI GOTV mobilization effort have been able to make 10,845 calls! While we hit our final goal of 10,000 now we have to make sure that our community gets to the polls. We are at the final stretch and still need YOUR HELP to make sure our community gets to the polls, so please forward this email widely!

Ami Bera and Raj Goyle make the list

Today, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee announced the first round of candidates selected for the prestigious “Red to Blue” program that targets GOP-held districts. It's awesome that the list includes two Asian American candidates: Ami Bera who is running in CA-03 and Raj Goyle who is running in KS-04.

Raj Goyle Sets Cash on Hand Record

As we reported earlier, moderate Kansas State Rep. Raj Goyle has turned the open seat race in Kansas into one of the few pick up opportunities for the Democratic party in 2010. According to his recent press release, Goyle $252,953.29 in the final quarter of 2009. The race is still an uphill battle, but Goyle seems to be doing everything right.

Raj Goyle makes KS race competitive

Thanks to his great first quarter in fundraising and a history of winning in Republican territory, Democratic candidate for Congress in Kansas 4th Congressional District and current State Senator Raj Goyle, has had his race upgraded from Safe Republican to Likely Republican by the well-respected Congressional Quarterly.  While this remains an uphill battle, the upgrade gives a glimmer of hope and could show further momentum.

Surya Yalamanchili becomes sixth South Asian to run for Congress

Add reality-TV contestant Surya Yalamanchili to the growing list of South Asians running for Congress.

Indian American PAC formed by IALI

It looks like this actually happened last month, but we just got this press release in our inbox today, "Indian American Political Body Launches Action Fund." Either way, it's great news with as many as five Indian Americans running for Congress this cycle. According to the release, the newly-formed political action committee has already raised $100,000 which would make it one of the largest, if not the largest, Asian American PAC in the country. Congrats to Varun and his team. Great work!

Indian Americans running for Congress

Here at APAP, we've reported quite a few times on the number of South Asians running for Congress this election cycle. It's a stellar group including announced candidates physician Ami Bera in CA-03, Iraq War Veteran Manan Trivedi in PA-06, State Senator Raj Goyle in KS-04 and attorney Ravi Sangisetty in LA-03, as well as rumored candidate Reshma Saujani in NY-14. Now it seems like others are noticing this trend as well.

Asian American candidates fundraising numbers

In the 2010 election cycle so far, six Asian Americans have officially announced their candidacies for Congress, not including the seven incumbents. We've reported on a few of the fundraising numbers already, but here's a handy chart that includes all their numbers for these challengers (and their key opponents) as of 9/30/2009.

Raj Goyle raises impressive amount

There are a rumored five South Asian candidates running for Congress in 2010. One of the top draws, though in an extremely tough district, is Kansas State Representative Raj Goyle who is running to replace Republican Todd Tiahrt. Given the obvious obstacles of an extremely conservative district, one that gave John McCain 58% of the vote, it's great to see Raj post such strong numbers. $400,00 should go a long way in the district.
