Nikki Haley, Sex, and Race

A few weeks ago, Asian American candidate Nikki Haley was little known outside South Carolina. Now she is at the center of sensational sexual allegations--and the subject of increasingly vicious racial attacks.

Joseph Cao's reelection strategy

Here's an article from the Seattle Times on the tightrope that Louisiana Republican Joseph Cao has had to walk as he tries to run for re-election in a heavily Democratic district. He voted against Obama's economic stimulus package, but then turned around and provided the lone Republican vote for health care reform.

Philip Spooner Video: Republican WWII Veteran Makes Case for Gay Marriage

Check this out:

Philip Spooner, 86, a lifetime Republican and World War II veteran is a great American hero who has served our country. Surprise to most people, he happens to support gay marriage. Back in April, 2009, the honorable veteran gave a poignant speech in support of gay marriage at Maine's Judiciary Committee.

His voice stumbles as he gives his life story, serving in multiple battles in Europe, helping wounded Americans, and, more importantly, explaining that he is a true American. At the end he states there is nothing more American than fighting for equality.

Republican Sasha Gong stereotypes Asian American voters

Here's a crazy post over at Bluecommonwealth.com, Bizarre Comments by Republican Opponent of Cherniele Herring.

Joe Wilson's Outburst and a Sneak Peek at the Immigration Debate

If you didn't know, Congressman Wilson (South Carolina - R) shouted "You lie!" at the President of the United States of America during a joint session of Congress.  South Carolina Democratic party chair Carol Fowler commented, "Never has any member of Congress shown such disrespect for the president during a speech" (CNN)  FYI, you can contribute to Wilson's midterm election opponent -- Rob Miller has a decent shot

Another Very Republican Texas Representative Moment

Caught this at angry asian man: Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-TX), gripes about how federal funds going to China for the protection of rare cats and dogs may actually result in "moo goo dog pan or moo goo cat pan":

Again I appreciate the sensitivities with regard to rare cats and dogs around the world. With regard to the previous votes on this bill in the House, to be specific, 227 Democrats voted "aye," 67 Republicans voted "aye," which also was about the same numbers, similar numbers, that voted for the bailout back in September, which was also a huge mistake. There was one Democrat that voted "no" and 118 Republicans that voted "no."

But we are even in different times now. We are still borrowing money from the Chinese. And, once again, the irony here is incredible. We are going to borrow more money from the Chinese to possibly give them money back to create habitats for wild dogs and cats that are rare.

There is no assurance that if we did that we wouldn't end up with moo goo dog pan or moo goo cat pan. There is no way to assure that money will not be wasted when it's sent to foreign countries.

Cao (LA-02) Faces Recall. That was quick.

cao_img1 Wow, everyone knew that Joseph Cao (LA-02) would have a tough time getting re-elected as a Republican in a district that is D+28. Well, Cao may not even get that far. After being for the stimulus, before he was against it, a group of local ministers have decided to launch a recall effort of the first Vietnamese American Congressman. People are pissed:
One elected official, State Representative Juan A. LaFonta, Democrat of District 96 told Bayoubuzz that he does not know about the existence of the petition but that he would sign it. … “People are starving and Cao needs to represent the people of the district”, LaFonta said.
