SAFRA: What's in it for Asian Americans & Pacific Islanders?

Did you hear? President Obama signed SAFRA (Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act) into law last week, and Greg Cendana (APAP Board member/President of USSA) was on the front lines making it happen. Earlier this fall, students, staff, and faculty across the University of California demonstrated against the 32% tuition fee hikes. What was intended as peaceful protests for some in the recent weeks, ended not only in arrests--but also beating, tasering, and shooting of students by police and demonstrators at various campuses, including UC Berkeley, UCLA, UC Santa Cruz, and UC Davis.


Ed Secretary Arne Duncan meets with College Students

Yesterday, after numerous press events on Capital Hill, I had the opportunity to meet with US Education Secretary Arne Duncan regarding student aid reform and his support of the Student Aid & Fiscal Responsibility Act (SAFRA), H.R. 3221 which will be voted on by the US House of Representatives Thursday.
