LGBT/Pride Week

June is LGBT pride month. We have a variety of queer AAPI's, friends, families and allies posting about their experiences. Thanks to Be DeGuzman, one of APAP's 2009 Unsung Heroes, for coordinating this special week of posts.

To help with our upcoming hate crimes/Vincent Chin week (June 21) or Pacific Islander week (Aug), please let us know. If you have a topic you or your agency would like to coordinate, email us.

Leland Cheung profile in Boston Globe

News has been pretty slow during the holiday season, but here's an article from the Boston Globe on newly-elected Cambridge City Councilman Leland Cheung. Our APAP volunteers in Boston have been in contact with Cheung about organizing a meet-and-greet in the coming new year. Stay tuned for more details on how you can meet this up-and-coming politician.

Leland Cheung elected to Cambridge City Council

Here's another history-making Asian American candidate from Tuesday's elections. Leland Cheung became the first Asian American elected to the Cambridge City Council. As a joint candidate at both MIT and Harvard, Cheung definitely has the educational background.

Sam Yoon Still In It; Running as Deputy Mayor on Flaherty Ticket

Boston City Councilor Sam Yoon may not have made it to the second stage of the mayoral election in November, but don't count him out yet. In a historic move, Yoon will be campaigning with Michael Flaherty on an innovative "joint ticket" with Flaherty for Mayor and Yoon for Deputy Mayor.  The "unusual partnership," announced this morning at City Hall by the candidates, is believed to be a first, according to the Boston Globe.

Sam Yoon Edged Out in Mayoral Primary Election

This past Tuesday, Boston held a preliminary election.  The two top vote getters - Tom Menino (51%) and Michael Flaherty (24%) - will face off in the November Runoff election for Mayor.  Yoon came in with a respectable 21% of the votes.

Matthew Tharakan and I spent this past weekend spreading the word in the South Asian community about City Councilmember Sam Yoon’s mission to restore transparency and accountability to Boston City Hall.  We visited local South Asian businesses, morning Eid prayer at the Islamic Society of Boston Cultural Center, and the Hare Krishna Rath Yathra festival on the Boston Common.

The Boston Phoenix Endorses Sam Yoon

The Boston Phoenix has endorsed Sam Yoon.  This is awesome news.  The fact that he is a relative newcomer speaks volumes of the high regard that he is commanding in Boston, and I'm guessing that much of this respect comes from the fact that Sam pounded Menino in the debate.  If elected, Sam will help fix education in Boston, and he will make Boston politics more transpare
