Asian Americans top most expensive campaigns for NY City Council

Asian Americans running for office in New York City had a banner year this past cycle, not just with the record-number of candidates, but also the amount of money they raised. In fact, the three most expensive campaigns for New York City Council were all run by Asian Americans: Kevin Kim, Yen Chou and Peter Koo.

Asian American candidates vote results

There were quite a few Asian Americans on the ballot yesterday. Here are the raw numbers for some of the races that APAP was covering this past election cycle. Special congratulations to all the winners, including historic victors Mark Keam in Virginia and John Liu in New York City.

Asian-American Republican Aims For An Upset In District 20

New York City is, and will continue to be a heavily Democratic city on election day.  In fact, most Republican opposition is token or irrelevant.  The election is far from over in the District 20 (Flushing), Queens.  After a contentious primary, Democrat nominee Yen Chou squeaked out a 183 vote win over nearest rival SJ Jung as well as several other candidates.  All in all, her votes accounted for only 25% of the total votes cast.  Now, in spite of the heavy Democratic advantage, Republican Peter Koo has a chance of uniting dissatisfied Democratic voters and small b

Asian Americans show political muscle in New York

On Tuesday, history was made as three Asian Americans look poised to join the city council: Margaret Chin in District 1, Kevin Kim in District 19 and Yen Chou in District 20. That's a major increase from the single City Councilman in the city's 300-something year history, John Liu.

Kevin Kim wins City Council seat in Queens, First Korean American

UPDATE (11/4/09) - Unfortunately, we got a little ahead of ourselves on this one. Back in Sept, Kevin won the nomination and we assumed he would win the general election. In an upset, Kevin actually lost to Republican Daniel Halloran III. More information on the race can be found here.

Kevin Kim, Yen Chou, Margaret Chin, Win; John Liu Headed For Runoff

Big news out of today's election.  Today is a historic day for Asian Americans in New York City.  New York City will have (pending November's elections) at least three API City Councilmen.  Additinally, this was a record year in terms of API candidates and hopefully a sign for future elections.  To clarify, only the citywide elections (Mayor, Comptroller, Public Advocate) will go to runoff if no candidate receives 40% of the vote.

Issue of Race surfaces in New York City Council primary

The race to replace City Councilman John Liu's seat is getting down to the wire and things are getting heated. With just two weeks to go until the primary election, Sept. 15, the six Democratic candidates — John Choe, Yen Chou, S.J. Jung, Constantine Kavadas, Isaac Sasson and James Wu — met for a heated debate in Flushing and the claws came out.

Grading the Websites of AAPI Candidates: NYC Edition

There are lots of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders running for local, state and federal office all across the country in 2009 and 2010. In hopes of analyzing each campaign’s new media strategy, we’ll be posting a series of entries with their websites and other on-line presence.  (If anyone knows HTML and can help me make this into a pretty grid, please let me know. I eventually want to have one master grid for all AAPI candidates around the country running for office.)
