The Olympic Torch runners came through San Francisco this morning, and thousands of protesters and supporters turned out, causing Mayor Gavin Newsom to switch the published route in an effort to avoid conflict.

From the SF Chronicle:
"Gavin Newsom runs San Francisco the way the premier of China runs his country - secrecy, lies, misinformation, lack of transparency and manipulating the populace," said Aaron Peskin, District 3 supervisor. "He misled supporters and opponents of the run. People brought their families and their children, and (mayoral officials) hatched a cynical plan to please the Bush State Department and the Chinese government because of the incredible influence of money."
The planned closing ceremony was also moved from a publicized central location to a much quieter venue at the airport before the torch moves on to its next destination, Buenos Aires.
Any of your thoughts on recent criticism and editorializing on China's chance to shine in the world's spotlight? There are organized and impromptu actions worldwide regarding the human rights issues, China's position on Darfur, and its policies regarding Tibet and Burma. If anything, the torch relay is truly fulfilling its role: to raise awareness for the Olympics and especially to encourage review of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for Beijing to host the games this year.
