There is a growing list of supporters for Councilmember John Liu’s Campaign for NYC Comptroller.  In addition to the list of community leaders and elected officials that had joined him at the Campaign Kickoff in early March, there has been labor support also starting to make strong supportive announcements.

The Transport Worker Union (TWU) Local 100, representing nearly 38,000 active members and about 26,000 retirees, enthusiastically endorsed Councilmember John Liu for Comptroller on Tuesday.

“New York City faces a crisis in our mass transit system.  With Albany continuing the trend of disinvestment in our transportation network by drastically cutting services and increasing fares, now more than ever we need elected officials who will hold the MTA, DOT and other agencies and authorities accountable and promote efficiencies in our transit system,“ said President Roger Toussaint.

Toussaint also stated, “John Liu, as Chair of the Council’s Transportation Committee, has been a champion for straphangers and working families across the City.  In this ongoing economic crisis, we will need a Comptroller who can find ways to save taxpayers' money. We will need a Comptroller who will use the billions of dollars in federal stimulus money to ensure that jobs stay in New York City and that our subways and infrastructure are improved.  John Liu will be that Comptroller.”

TWU Acting President Curtis Tate said, “John has supported capital programs to upgrade subways, buses and ferries to meet increased demand and conform to higher environmental standards; sponsored laws to improve pedestrian safety and initiate public works projects improving New York City’s transit system. Our members support John wholeheartedly as he is the best advocate for us as Comptroller.”

This is in addition to a previous endorsement from the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance (APALA) , AFL-CIO New York Chapter, led by President Lonwoy Moy.  Founded in 1992, the APALA, AFL-CIO is the first and only national organization of Asian Pacific American (APA) union members. Over 600,000 APA workers have joined unions and are seeking better pay, improved benefits, dignity on the job, and a voice in the workplace.
