Here's a quick update on the Republican primary heating up in CA-47. That's the race between Republican state Assemblyman Van Tran and fellow GOP'er Quang X. Pham. Both men are vying to unseat current Democratic Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez. Sanchez is heavily-favored for re-election as President Obama took 60 percent of the district's vote in 2008.
Tran, the annointed candidate of the party establishment and a member of the National Republican Congressional Committee's "Young Guns" program, has raised $254,000 through June 30th.
Pham, 44, a healthcare entrepreneur, community leader and decorated Marine Corps veteran, is simply trying to keep pace.
"We're fundraising. We're going to events. We're meeting with officials. We're doing everything that we believe could show supporters, donors, and voters that I am a viable candidate for that district," said Pham, an author, entrepreneur and Marine veteran.
Pham has already begun adding personal funds to his campaign, which he expects to meet its goal of $250,000 raised through Sept. 30, the end of the next fundraising quarter.
Pham said he's showing people "if this candidacy is worth their investment or their contribution than it should definitely be worth my money."
I checked out Pham's page and the first thing I saw was his logo, which uses the letter "Q" with a field of stripes running through it, just like the familiar Obama logo. Add that with the title of his book, "A Sense of Duty: My Father, My American Journey" and I couldn't help, but think someone's trying to position himself in a certain light. Too bad he's in the wrong party.
