Michelle Rhee & Frank Wu talk about the Model Minority Myth and stereotypes of AAPIs as it pertains to AAPIs in education. They cover issues of glass ceilings for AAPIs in education, disaggregating AAPI statistics.
Rhee: "If we really want to change what's happening in public education today and the outcomes of poor minority kids today we have to change what's going on in the classroom and in the schools. Low academic achievement has nothing to do the student's ability and potential but the environment that is set up for them, what we as adults are or are not doing for them."
Wu: Shares the history of Vincent Chin and effective leadership stemming from creating a positive community change. He also talked about the effects of bullying in relation to the recent events in Philadelphia and how it must be taken seriously, it's the start. "This stuff is real, it's not trivial, we can't brush it off. Anyone who does is just setting the stage for a hate crime or something far worse."
