Fresh on the heels of Jun Choi's Congressional run, we learn that Connecticut State Representative William Tong has also thrown his hat into the race to replace outgoing Connecticut Senator, Joe Lieberman. Here's William's campaign's webpage.
State Rep. William Tong of Stamford said Sunday he wants to prove that Americans have better opportunities than previous generations despite a prevailing belief that the American dream is in jeopardy.
Tong made his comments on WFSB-TV's "Face the State."
He was on the short list of potential federal prosecutors considered by President Barack Obama, Tong's law professor at the University of Chicago. Obama nominated former White House lawyer David Fein (FINE') as U.S. attorney for Connecticut.
Former Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz and U.S. Rep. Chris Murphy are also vying for the 2012 Democratic nomination to succeed Lieberman, who was first elected in 1988.
I've met Representative Tong several times. He always seems like a really nice guy and very committed to the community. He's described himself as a fiscal conservative, so I'm going to have to learn more about his policy positions. The general consensus seems to be that Tong is really running to raise his name I.D. for a future campaign down the line.
Anyway, Tong, along with Choi, are often seen as two of the rising stars of Asian American politics. I am sure a lot of people will be interested in rallying behind their campaigns. I hope they prove to be progressive voices that we can support.
